Wordabble has the ability to give definitions for words through our website. Since we use the ENABLE dictionary, there are some crazy words and equally odd definitions. It’s really hard to find a good source for these so we came up with our own solution that utilizes a couple different services and performs some calculations on the word itself to see what type of word it is and what the root of the word might be by removing suffixes.
I spent the past couple days giving the definitions a major overhaul and the result is a pretty solid system for defining words. I’d say almost 95% of the words in Wordabble can be defined now using links to “similar words”. If everything fails, we provide a link to a Google define search — but hopefully this won’t ever have to be used.
I don’t think this feature is used by the majority of our users but the project itself was fun and the fact that I can provide some better results than a Google define search (in some instances) is slightly rewarding. If you’re a Wordabble user and enjoy the definitions system (or have improvements to suggest), feel free to contact us and let us know what you think.
